SASS Beat Celts to Finish Runners Up

The U17s win against Cambridge Celts confirmed their status as league runners-up and leaves them in a good place for the cup final.

The final league fixture against Celts was a game of few chances and was not the best game to watch if I am honest.

The first half saw Jonnie depart the field early leaving the visitors with a central defensive partnership of Louie (normally left wing) and Gregory (right back). His berth at right back was filled by Sam P (right attacking midfield).

The makeshift defence looked very good and kept Celts down to minimal chances. In fact Celts nearest opportunity came when Sam M headed a Celts corner against his own post.

Ironically SASS’s best effort came when a Celts defender headed a cross onto his own bar and Daniel failed to net the easy-looking rebound. I blame the father for this level of incompetence in the player.

Half time of nil all was followed by an equally tight second half.

The deadlock was eventually broken when Thomas surged into the box and was clipped by a late challenge to gain a penalty. Ted put the spot kick away and SASS led.

Celts threw everything at SASS to get an equaliser and almost got one in the last minute. A powerful shot was kept out by Aidan. Some think the ball crossed the line, others did not. Without goal line technology the benefit of the doubt went to the defending side and it goes down as a wonder save by the keeper.

The game ended one nil to the visitors and they finish second in the league and have the cup final to look forward to in a fortnight. What a brilliant season they have had and the whole squad deserve credit as they have all played their part in these achievements.
As for this game three people deserve special mentions. Greg and Louie played brilliantly in the centre half positions they are unaccustomed to playing and looked like a good partnership.

Sam P played right back and was magnificent. He tracked the Celts winger all game and played as if he had been a full back all his playing career.

Well done to all the players but these three excelled. Let us hope the whole team can perform and lift that cup. The players would deserve this for their endeavours this season.

Good luck boys!
