Unbeaten Run Goes in a Disappointing Manner

By

A three nil loss to Thaxted means that SASS U17s perfect start to the season and the possibility of back-to-back unbeaten league campaigns are no more

A very windy cross-wind and a mud bath of a pitch were not ideal playing conditions for the match but it was the same for both sides.

SASS started slowly but made the first opportunity. George forced a good save from the opposition keeper when maybe he could have done better. This was as good as it got and was downhill all the way after.

Thaxted opened their account on ten minutes when the right winger made his way past three weak challenges and shoot. The parry fell to a Thaxted player who glibly buried the chance.

Upon 18 minutes a shot was again parried by Aidan and fortunately fell to a SASS defender who had time to clear, but hesitation and indecision were fatal and the hosts were two up.

SASS did not really create much in the first half to merit getting back into the game and the restart saw more of the same. Inaccurate passing, some wayward at times, was mixed with a lack of energy and purpose and heavy doses of over-elaboration completed the display.

The third goal was something to behold. A real lesson of how NOT to do things.

A needless foul on a Thaxted player was punished with a deserved yellow card.

The resulting free kick was central and at least 35 yards out, a three man wall was needlessly erected.

The free kick was lobbed straight over the wall into the box where Thaxted had a four on two man advantage from which they eventually scored.

Three nil and SASS got what they deserved, nothing .It is a shame for a proud record to go in such a manner but these things happen in football and the conditions were a contributing factor.

Too many players having an off day against a team that just wanted it more.

However, it is not all doom and gloom. Aidan came and caught several crosses and corners which under the circumstances was excellent keeping as the wind was playing havoc with the game.

Ted again had an excellent game and never gave up the fight even if some around him did. James returned from injury which is good for all associated with the team.

We have to put this game into perspective. The conditions were awful, the pitch was terrible and the team up to now have been amazing this season and last.

They have brought so much enjoyment to those watching by playing elegant football that has at times been breath-taking.

This result is hopefully a one off and even if it is not we have to be grateful to the players to what they have achieved to date as the whole squad have been brilliant in their attitude and aptitude.

Godmanchester at home next. An opportunity to get back to playing good football and put this episode behind us.
